About the Booth
As of November 2001, the T.O. TIX booth is a permanent fixture on the new Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto’s newest outdoor facility. Designed by Brown + Storey Architects, the long anticipated opening brought a new dimension to the heart of Toronto by creating a tourist attraction similar to TKTS in Times Square, New York. Christopher Hume, Urban Issues reporter for the Toronto Star, recently wrote of Yonge-Dundas Square: It opened quietly last November and all indications so far point to success; it now seems certain that Toronto’s newest public square will live up to expectations. Originally known as Five Star Tickets, the original booth was created in 1983. It was located on the southwest corner of Yonge and Dundas Streets, just outside the Eaton Centre in the heart of the Downtown Theatre District.
In 1993, the Toronto Theatre Alliance took over the booth as a service to the performing arts community and their patrons. Continuing to uphold the mandate of making theatre affordable and accessible to everyone, the booth was renamed T.O. TIX. In the spring of 1995, T.O. TIX moved from the corner of Yonge and Dundas Streets to a storefront located just 300 metres south of the original booth location, still within the very popular Eaton Centre district. In the spring of 1998 T.O. TIX moved inside the Eaton Centre..
Since its inception, T.O. TIX has served thousands of residents and tourists alike and has poured millions of dollars back into Toronto’s performing arts community. T.O. TIX continues to be a major destination, and offers the finest in theatre, dance, comedy, opera and music – at half price.
T.O. TIX is fully wheelchair-accessible, and full access from the subway to street level is available. The booth is also sheltered from rain by a large canopy.
